In honor of the Westboro Baptist Church’s announced visit to the Ohio State University I wanted to help everyone come to a better understanding of this group. The Westboro congregation travels around the country protesting at various events, which are likely to receive media coverage, in order to spread the word about how “god hates fags.” Events they have attended include military funerals, funerals of homosexual-hate violence victims, celebrity funerals, and Holocaust memorials. The congregation attempted to protest at the funeral of Christina Green, a 9 year-old victim of a shooting in Tucson, AZ, but was prevented by city officials. They also tried to hold demonstrations at a memorial in Joplin, Missouri for victims of the tornado on May 22, 2011, but were prevented by local residents. Many community organizations, such as the Patriot Guard Riders, were established to protect funerals from the Westboro Baptist Church. Even The Ku Klux Klan, a racial hate group has denounced the Westboro Baptist Church as “hatemongers”.
This is a very large amount of information to take in all at once, but the main thing is that this group is extremely devoted to expressing their belief that “god hates homosexuals” and wants to convey it to the public. However, their claims that disasters and deaths are caused by increasing acceptance of homosexuality, are unsound considering the myriad of activist groups that oppose them. The Ku Klux Klan, regarded as one of the most hateful organizations, described the church as “hatemongers” as well as “destructive to society.” Such an event would be similar to Josef Stalin telling a modern world leader that he is not treating his people with enough kindness. Needless to say, it should be cause for alarm if one of the largest hate groups identifies a church of god as harmful and malicious to the general public. On the other hand, the congregation is not completely bizarre. Their beliefs are primarily based on scripture in Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 which respectively state, “Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable” and “If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.” At face value this does seem to give credit to their dislike of homosexuals. However, the Westboro Baptist Church made a point of protesting at various Holocaust memorials and museums, denouncing people of Jewish faith and exclaiming “God hates Jews.” The hypocrisy is that the scripture from which their hatred was derived was written by Jews whom they hate. In fact, their Lord Jesus Crist was himself a member of the Jewish faith.
Furthermore, the Westboro Baptist church has claimed to be among the religious category of Primitive Baptists. Others who share this categorization though, do not consider themselves at all akin to the Westboro Baptist Church, and very much wish not to be associated with them or their beliefs. Ultimately, the Westboro Baptist Church has come to spite homosexuals simply because they do not understand them and view gays as sinners. They have no concrete purpose for hating people of different sexual orientations, but just do it out of fear and misunderstanding. The Bible may state specifically about gender relationships, but they defamed the same group credited with writing that book. Wholly ascribing to a book written by a group who is “hated by God” does by transference make these people hated by God themselves.
This post was very informing. I didn't exactly know what they are before. All I knew was that they are rude and disrespectful to the other people. Although they says that they are believing God and following the Bible, I believe that they shouldn't just follow one thing from the Bible. The Bible contains a lot of messages and rules from the God. They are being just one-sided because God hates those but he also loves them. They should know about that fact too. And being disrespectful never helps to make other people like the certain thing.
ReplyDeleteWhen I read this blog, i was angry with how the Westboro Baptist Church would go around and protest at private events such as funerals. I do not think it was necessary for them to be stating their beliefs at such events. In their church, they may believe that certain people are making poor decisions or being brought up in bad way, such as saying "god hates fags" or "god hates Jews". People are allowed to make their own decisions. I also thought it was interesting how the KKK called the Westboro Baptist Church, "hate mongers" because they were a group that hated a certain race and did terrible things.
ReplyDeleteI found this article to be very informative. Growing up, my parents lost faith in the Catholic church and its teachings, and from then on I was always skeptical of any religion. This instance only goes to show that religion is not always good and gracious; it has a dark and hateful side. These Baptists should not be taking the Bible so literally; in my eyes, the Bible is a book of stories that are supposed to help people live their lives. It is up to the reader to interpret those stories for themselves, but obviously in this case they seem to have over-interpreted the meaning. If they're going to be ignorant bigots, they shouldn't be protesting at people's funerals. I'm sure the Bible doesn't teach you to be blatantly disrespectful.
ReplyDeleteWhile reading this article I had mixed feelings. Primarily, I take issue with the Westboro Baptist Church's stand on homosexuality. I consider myself a Christian and though i am not pro-homosexuality i believe that all people should be loved and respected equally with no prejudice. Spreading hate is not the way to accomplish a task. My other issue lies with the source cited. The Ku Klux Klan is not valid source for any opinions. It is literally the pot calling the kettle black. Anything that another hate group has to say on this issue should be taken with a grain of salt. Given strict factual knowledge and personal experience, it is up to the individual to make a judgement about the Westboro Baptist Church.
ReplyDeleteThis article was perfect. I actually just heard about this group earlier today (ironic, I know) and was completely taken away. It is amazing to me that there are actually people that have beliefs this strong. I mean, I know everyone does in some way, but to invade into mourning places of others is unbelievable. The Bible may say one thing, but that gives no reason to be blatantly disrespectful. I feel like the Westboro Baptist Church is acting in very selective ways as well. The Bible also says things about being faithful and not committing crime, yet one won't find the members protesting at events such as these. No matter the belief, one should be able to do as they please and not have to deal with others personally disrespecting them.
ReplyDeleteI've known about WBC for maybe 5 or so years now, but some of the information about them was still new and interesting to me. The fact that the KKK is frowning upon them puts the WBC's views into perspective very strongly. In my eyes, the Church is comprised of 'attention whores'. At this point, they know that the U.S. and civilized world at large despises them, and they bask in the attention the media pays them. For every mention in the Bible about homosexuality being a sin, I'm sure there are at least 5 mentions of how evil it is to judge and condemn others. Westboro Baptist Church are not practicing Christianity, they're practicing hypocrisy.
ReplyDeleteWhile reading this article, I was angry at the Westboro Baptist Church. I do not consider myself to be a part of any specific religion, however, I still believe that you should treat others how you would want them to treat you. No one has the right to judge anyone for how it is they choose to live their lives and the decisions they choose to make. I also thought that the statements made by the KKK were extremely contradictory, as they're known as the largest hate group in history. I think that people should stop taking the things read in the Bible so literally. It is the first book ever written, over 2000 years ago. I think it is unnecessary to live our lives according to that in today's times. Things are changing so quickly and we need to be more open and accepting towards them.
ReplyDeleteI find myself getting angry every time I read a story regarding the Westboro Baptist Church. The fact that the KKK, whose white caps and robes have been synonymous with hatred and violence for over a hundred years, takes issue with the hate being spread shows that the messages of the WBC are truly unacceptable. Any true Christian should be insulted at the fact that the members of Westboro claim to follow the Bible. While the people at the WBC have managed to single out a few passages from the Bible which appear to condemn homosexuality, they have failed to actually understand the rest of the text, which embodies love and respect for all people. The WBC and its followers cast Christianity in a very poor light, and commit acts of disrespect which should be unheard of in any advanced culture.
ReplyDeleteI heard my friends talking about this last week. What I think is that people have their own rights to believe in things they want to. As the saying goes, "treat people the way you want to be treated." And it makes no sense to ruin others lives and religions.

ReplyDeleteThe organization may have done their job with following their own principles. And I can't deny their claims 'God hates homosexuals' since I am Christian and have learnt as love same gender consider as one of the sins can't be forgiven like suicidal. However, they also have some of contradictions as others claims as well. So I agree that the ways they are doing is wrong. Therefore, I may think that the organization shouldn't be too offensive against to people who are not in same branch with them unless they will be deserved to called "hatemongers".
ReplyDeleteI like the way you guys wrote and those examples you gave are very appreciate. This article's awesome, very professional. I knew nothing about the group before I read this article and in my opinion, there always be some extremists trying to spread their misleading thoughts and ideas under the banner of religion. People have their own judgements and ways for living. Why should they interfere! Their opinions and speeches contained context that had been taken out of context. Of course, everyone has a right to speak, but what they done has shown us that not everyone is worth listening to.

ReplyDeleteI was shocked when I read those terrible things done by the people of the Westboro Baptist Church. I thought people who believe in God should have the merciful hearts to eveyone. If the Westboro Baptist Church's people are really christians, they should know that God loves each human being. God will lead and correct people's mistakes in gental ways rather than prevent people brutally like the Westboro Baptist Church's so-called christians did. The Westboro Baptist Church misinterpret the Bible. They are not trying to create peace. Insteadly, they are the people who betraied God and brought sadness and turbulences to people.
ReplyDeleteI think that I heard about this group on the news before, I just did not catch the entire story until now. However, this type of radicalism in my personal opinion is flat out disgusting. I understand that people have their own personal beliefs, and they are entitled to them, but that does not give them the right to go around and harass others, especially when they're in a state of grief. I'm sure there are some people who would agree with these Westboro people, but NO one with any amount of integrity would agree with their tactics. Furthermore, we now live in a society in which homosexuality is readily becoming more acceptable in the popular culture. I agree completely that their hate is misguided and created out of fear and misunderstanding. People should be allowed to make their own decision on the issue in their own time instead of having hate-filled radicals attempt to shove one-sided views down their throat anytime they please. Really good blog.
ReplyDeleteAs I'm reaindg this article, I'm really getting angry. Because I
ReplyDeletecan't understand their action and belief to other people who have
different thinkings. I think that no one can denounce openly
others. I don't think that they have to take the thinking, but
understand the difference.
I think the Westboro Baptist Church distort e meaning of Bible, and take just what they want. Actually, I am not a Christian, and I barely know about the Christian things, but I can’t understand what Westboro Baptist Church is doing. They compel people to understand what they believe, and in my opinion, this is not a right way having faith. I think nobody can judge others their own thoughts because they are just different. Of course, I cannot make them stop what they believe or what they do, but I think they need to understand and respect other.
ReplyDeleteThe Westoboro Baptist Church may have extreme views to some, but it is their right to follow what they believe. I personally respect someone who follows their beliefs to the ends of the Earth much more than someone whose values align with my own, but isn't fully committed.
ReplyDeleteI never heared this story until I read this blog.I think everyone has their different opinion, different habbit, different culture. This is why can make our wold colorful, not drab. The same as the beliefs.
