People argue as to when a fetus is actually human. At 3 weeks, the baby's heart begins beating. At 6 weeks, brain waves are traceable, and at 11 weeks, all of the baby's organs are present and functioning. Doctors recommend that an abortion is perform at or before 12 weeks into the pregnancy, to make it easier for the mother. The mother can technically have an abortion at any time before birth, but debate is there as to when the time is appropriate to have an abortion.
As for the second question, debates again arises as to when the fetus is a part of the mother's body, and when it is a separate being. One can also question when the change between those two states happens. If the fetus is considered simply a part of the mother's body, is it okay for her to remove that part at will? If the fetus is alive, does it not have a say as to whether it lives or dies?
The third issue deals with problems a woman can face after and during an abortion. Medical issues can arise during the procedure and cause issues after the fact, such sterility. Also, severe mental or emotional problems can be caused by the abortion. The mother has to deal with the fact that, depending on her beliefs, she has killed her own child.
The last question deals with whether or not the child is better off dead rather than having a bad childhood if the mother does not want it. If the child is born and raised by mother who does not want it, many issues can arise in the child's life, such as behavioral, emotional and criminal problems caused by a lack of affection from the mother.
The debates still rages over abortion, and likely will for many years to come.
Abortion is too commonly used as a form of contraception. Why are women who cannot financially or physically support a child having unprotected sex in the first place? The vast majority of the time, available birth control practices are sufficient for preventing pregnancy. Abortion is not necessary in most any case except for cases of rape. Women who are raped and become pregnant should be given the right to abortion, as they need not suffer further after their assault. While cases where pregnancy occurred even after use of contraception are highly debatable, it is likely that both men and women would be more careful about sex if they considered the consequences beforehand, and knew that abortion was not an option.
ReplyDeleteI agree with mattb12. Abortion should not be an option in any case besides those of rape, incest, or if the mother's life is at definite risk. If a woman is raped, she should clearly have the option of abortion since the pregnancy wasn't even desired in the first place. I understand the debate over the development of the baby and at which points in time would mark abortion as legal, but this is clearly individuals trying to find excuses and reasons for their careless actions. If you are going to have unprotected sex, you have to be ready to accept the potential consequences and not rely on something as murderous and unjustified as abortion for your form of birth control.
ReplyDeleteAbortion's disadvantage outweighs its advantage. Firstly, it is unfair for a unborn baby that its living right is controlled by its mother if the baby is already alive. If the mother decides to do abortion after the baby has grown a human, it is no difference with murder. Secondly, abortion hurts mother's health. Many women cannot be pregnant after abortion. In this case, abortion is bad not only to babies, but also to mothers.
ReplyDeleteThis topic was interesting in the sense that it is so controversial, and everyone has their own opinion about it, and it is such an active topic of discussion in today's society. I would have to agree that abortion is wrong, simply because of the fact pregnancy is easily avoided through proper precautions including anti-birth drugs, protection, and the most effective, abstinence. I am aware about the argument about if a woman is raped and has no control over whether she'll take responsibility for the potential birth of a child, and I agree that in such circumstances she should be given the option if desired. In all other cases however, abortion should not be an option because people should take responsibility for their own actions.
ReplyDeleteI don't like the abortion at all but I believe that all women should be able to choose if they want the abortion or not if it's before 3 weeks from the pregnancy. I think that before it's heart start to beat, the fetus is a cell. The cell could be destroyed any time. The researchers do it all the time. Why can't women decide to get rid of the cell that is the part of their body. As long as the fetuses are before 3 weeks, I think it should be fine for women to get the abortion if they choose to.
ReplyDeleteIn my perspective, if one does not wish to hold responsibility for children, then one should use protection during the act of sex. However, some cases, such as rape, should be considered as exceptions. Even though the children born under those circumstances were not accounted for, those children should still be given a fighting chance to live.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to conclude whether abortion is right or wrong because people have different point of views from different angles on this issue which all seems reasonable. In my opinion abortion should be allowed and the mother should have the right to decide. Because i think the fetus is one part of the mother's body so it's a persional issue that others should not interfere. Also I agree that if the mother can not give her child a good life after his/her born then they should not give birth, otherwise once the baby is born, he/she will have to suffer his/her whole life in a difficult circumstances, which may also involves wider social costs.
ReplyDeleteI can't say whether abortion has positive or negative repercussions on the world and I do believe that people should do their utmost to avoid causing a pregnancy if they do not want a child, but this uncertainty does not give anyone the right to tell another human being how they must live the rest of their life. Thinking just about the woman, she will endure 9 months of essentially being sick and in pain constantly. Pregnancies are incredibly unpleasant for the woman. Next, the pregnancy culminates in what will likely be the most painful experience of the woman's life. Considering just this, there is more than just one life at stake per abortion. Then there is also the effect the child could have on the father. Maybe it could force him to drop out of school or prevent him from pursuing some dream of his. There is no way to include all of these many factors and variables meaning that there is no way for some kind of judge or third party to be 100% accurate and fair in their decisions if that course is taken. Making abortions illegal or by specific cases only would not be a positive influence on the world. It would also be an infringement on freedom in my opinion and I hope that it never comes to that. Lack of empathy is the first step away from democracy, freedom and all the other luxuries Americans claim to cherish.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with the majority who have commented so far. Abortion is used as a backup plan in the case that someone has unprotected sex. At this point, safe sex is emphasized to kids at all possible occasions and should be common knowledge to all. If someone is not responsible enough to practice safe sex they should not be having it at all.
ReplyDeleteI really hate abortion. First of all, it is not fair for the fetus, she/he even doesn't have the chance to choose what he/she wants. Besides, it also do harm to the mother's physical and mental health. However, if the parents didn't get ready for the baby, I would say abortion is a more appropriate choice. I suppose the baby will suffer more if his parents can't afford such complete and strong love.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what the majority of the class is saying. Personally, I think an abortion is not fair for the unborn child. It ruins the opportunity for the child to have a life. The child might not have anything wrong with it, but dies because the mother decides to have an abortion. The only reasonable need for an abortion is if the women is raped, other than that i don't think abortions should be allowed
ReplyDeleteI agree with Yang said. It is not fair to the fetus. Also it is very bad for women's body. If the parents don't want to get the baby, to do the safe sex, don't cause unnecessary damage.
ReplyDeleteAbortion has been controversal issue all around world. I think it is necessary evil. It is true that we can't make a dicission of one life but we need to think about people who are living at the same time. If a coupld doesn't want a child yet since they are not ready for it financially and with any other factors, children will be sufferred for their whole life. I think if a couple can be responsible for a child or woman wants a baby then they should have a child but if not, I think abortion is better for both child and a couple.
ReplyDeleteDue to my religious beliefs I am fine with someone choosing to have an abortion. It is better that the child not be born into a family where it will be raised poorly. Although, I don't think the government should have any say in it if a person wants to and a doctor will preform it.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I believe that the mother should be able to make her own decision on whether or not they would like to have an abortion. I do not think that it is right, but I do not think that the government should have any say so in how we choose to make decisions.
