Group 2: Immigration

There are many things that make up a great country like the United States of America, such as culture, art, food, landmarks, strong economic foundation, and the list goes on. However, one of the most important factors that distinguishes the U.S. from other countries is it's diversity. People come from all around the world just to be a part of the American society. They immigrate for many different reasons whether it be to avoid war, to gain the right to be independent from corrupt leaders, or to earn better jobs to support their families. No matter the reason, they're motivated by the thought of living a better life. America is "The Land of Opportunity" and a melting pot of culture, created by immigrants who all sought the same thing. This idea is contradictory of some of the things we see in the media today, in the sense that there are numerous debates and arguments on the issue of illegal immigration. A crime is an act that is considered wrong, but seeking a better life is just instinct and completely understandable as to why they would risk punishment by the law to be here.

  1. As immigrants come into our country, they are required to get legal documentation that it is legal for them to be in our country. Without this documentation, they can be in serious trouble. Immigrants come from all around the world and no matter the reasoning, there are illegal immigrants everywhere. There are many debates on the jobs and immigrant issue. Some say some jobs that could be offered to unemployed Americans are offered to immigrants. The problems go on and on and depending on a citizen's political views, some may be enraged by immigration. Some may not care at all. The issue is ongoing and may never be solved.

  2. America is truly the "land of opportunity" which is a reason why so many immigrants from different countries come to America: for a better life, more opportunities and freedom. Some immigrants from war torn countries or extremely poor countries come to try to make a better life, but many not be a legal resident. I don't think that is a reason to kick them out of the country for trying to improve their life or the life of their family. I understand that lately in the media many states have be cracking down on illegal immigrants because illegal immigrants have been costing states a lot of money to continue to support them, but i believe that there should be a more reasonable way of choosing who is allowed to stay and who must leave. Also some of the jobs that the immigrants are taking are jobs that Americans don't want to do anyways.

  3. I can't really say if illegal immgration is right or wrong. It's true that it is illegal, but most of the people who chose to come to America wanted a better life. And their home coutries might be suffering in wars and other issues at the same time. And is it reasonable just sending them back to their contries and let them live in pain again? I hope we can come up with a better solution for this.

  4. Generally, America is well known for the "land of opportunity".
Actually, many asian people want to go to the U.S. because of their better life.
As the article mentiond, the reasons to go to USA are various such as war or some pain things. So, the governemnt has to try to find proper solutions in order to reduce illegal immigrants. Because i think that america also need some working people. I really hope that they settle kind of this problems.

  5. United State of America, it is considered as the most difficult country to immigrant. Actually it is even difficult to stay for short period – international students or travelers. I think it is the reason why there are a lot of illegal immigrants in US. The regulations for international people to stay here and getting a green card are quite high-standard in this country, US. The only ways to get a US citizenship is born here or donate tons of money. But it is obvious that there are more people who can’t offer one of them. Therefore, I think the problems occur with illegal immigrant won’t be solved unless US government lease their regulations. Maybe it is going to be easier to manage criminals occurred with illegal immigrants.

  6. There are so many people come to the US to get American dream. Some people follow the immigration law, but some others come to the US illegal way because they do not have enough money for making documents, or some people just run away from their own country as mentioned on the article. I can understand some runway people, but if they just came to the US as illegal, they would be just nobody in the US. That is because they cannot be protected in the law. So I think the government needs to make solution for both America citizen and migrants.

  7. When most people think of America, they do think of it as the "land of opportunity." Every year, America has so many immigrants wanting to come to this country. When we read Outcasts United by Warren St. John, we got a feel for some of the reasons why many come to this country and the hardships they faced in their other country. All they want is a fresh start and a way to make a new life for themselves and their families. Many are illegal immigrants that travel to the United States and most are very poor. I do not feel that because these people cannot afford to start a new life here that they should be sent back, but given an opportunity to try and start a life here and then become legal citizens.

  8. It's true that there's many benifits that one can get when they immigrant to the US,but on the other hand they will also encounter with problems such as being far away from hometown and family, can not used to the new environment and language barrier and even fear if they are illeagal. They truely bring cheap labour, new cultures and fresh vitality to the American society but they also bring many problems like some of them breaks public security and culture shock. We need to consider both sides of the issue.

  9. There is no easy answer to the questions raised regarding immigration. The United States has long been seen as the "land of opportunity," which makes it the destination for immigrants from around the world. If all of the potential immigrants were allowed into the U.S., it would place a huge strain on the economy, likely increase the unemployment rate, and raise difficult housing issues. Therefore, simply loosening the requirements for immigration is likely not the best option. However, there are countless people who wish to immigrate to the U.S. legally who cannot because of a lack of money, and those who cannot wait the several months or years it may take to pass through the entire immigration process. America could provide opportunities to these people, but cannot due to the immigration restrictions. I believe that the cost to immigrate should be decreased, but that the selection process should be made more stringent. This way, poor people in foreign countries could immigrate more easily, while those with more money and less of a need for immigration would not be at a benefit. This, of course, does not solve many problems with the immigration process, but would be a definite improvement for those who need to immigrate but can't afford to.

  10. It's difficult to say for sure whether immigrants to the U.S. are a positive or negative influence. Certainly many of them come to the country to work hard and prove themselves to be productive and helpful members of society. Legal or not, hard working people are always something to be desired. At the same time though, extensive amounts of money are put into maintaining immigrant communities and many of those in the community are illegal and don't pay taxes. I believe ultimately though that immigrants are important and necessary for a country to develop and grow stronger. It's a simple fact that if people were not allowed to immigrate into he U.S. I wouldn't be here today. I think that the government ought to work on assimilating illegal immigrants that are already here so that they can become taxpaying residents which would fix most problems attributed to them.

  11. There is a process in place so that immigrants can become legal residents of the United States for a reason and it should be followed. America, especially under the stress it is today from war and economic crisis cannot be counted on to be the savior of the world. The government does not have the resources to provide for everyone who wants to come here. Though i wish we could provide for all those less fortunate and bring them in to the American Dream, it just is not possible to do while remaining afloat.

  12. I agreed with everything said in this blog. The last sentence really stuck with me because it never occurred to me that coming into this country illegally is a crime, even though they may be desperate for a better life. I find it sad that some people are forced to choose between a country at war and going to jail for simply searching for a better life. Although America is known as the "land of opportunity," it could be misleading because the majority of the time immigrants are forced to work menial tasks, such as a janitor or maid. This is hardly the opportunity they envisioned. I think that it is hypocritical on our government to be so harsh when it comes to immigrants today because everyone has ancestors that immigrated here years ago.

  13. America, even at its current financial standpoint, is a great place to pursue any goal, whether it be through business, family, civil liberties, or overall freedom. No matter how hard the United States border patrol tries to protect the southern border, which is clearly the most abused, individuals will never cease in their attempts to give themselves and their families a better life. Central American society is known for their value towards family. If it means one has to risk their life and cross the U.S. border to give aid to their family, they will do it. With the overall topic of illegal immigrants in mind, there are numerous debates such as the manipulation of health care, increased drug use and trafficking, and most importantly, an illegal immigrant's effect on the economy. The United States is shockingly irrational in the way it handles immigration. Unlike other nations that strategically use immigration to pursue national goals, we lurch from concerns about border security to illegal immigrants to drugs and crime without considering our long-term political and economic priorities. In reality, illegal immigrants are aiding the U.S. economy, despite the numerous truths and myths about how illegal immigrants "hurt America". Inevitably, a few of the myths have been addressed through the other comments. Given the importance of immigration to our economic growth, security and national identity, we need a new outlook on the topic. Honestly, if I were in an immigrant's position, given all the adversities they undoubtedly face, I would cross the U.S. border without hesitation to better my life and potentially my family's as well.

  14. There is no quick answer to this question. Many people who want to get good education come to America as it is a land of opportunity and one can enjoy the free academic atmosphere here. Thus, more and more people come to America. On the one hand, immigration has a good influence on the wealth creation as America attracts many elitist. Meanwhile, too much immigration may cause some social security problem.

  15. I believe no one in America can really say anything to the immigrants. The America was founded by the Immigrants. Going back to the 1700s, The Europeans were considered as the illegal immigrants but they still built the nation. Well, that was long time ago and people in these day wouldn't build a new country in the U.S. And Europeans were looking for the freedom and better life. Why can't the other people do that. Founding fathers did it, then other people should be able to do that too.
